Altos de Chavón
A stone Mediterranean village above the Chavón River

Altos de Chavón is a meticulously built replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village, perched on a cliff above the Chavón River near La Romana and completed in the 1970s as an artists' village for the Casa de Campo resort. Cobbled stone lanes lead past ivy-clad walls, craft workshops and the Iglesia de San Estanislao to a grand 5,000-seat Roman-style amphitheatre with sweeping river views. It's the country's most photogenic cultural stop and a favourite for couples and families wanting something beyond the beach. Our photographers frame you among the stonework, the archways and the amphitheatre — at its warmest in the soft, golden late-afternoon light, and pleasant to wander year-round.
