El Limón Waterfall

El Limón is a 40-metre waterfall on the Samaná peninsula, protected as a natural monument, with a cool pool at its foot where you can swim. It is reached by a 2.5 km trail from the village of El Limón, on foot in about 40 to 60 minutes or partly on horseback; the horses stop above the falls, and everyone walks down the steep final steps. The trail is hilly and often muddy, so it takes moderate fitness and good shoes. From Punta Cana it is a full-day trip of about 12 hours: about 1.5 to 2 hours by road to Miches or Sabana de la Mar, then about an hour by boat across Samaná Bay, often combined with Cayo Levantado. Around 80,000 people visit the falls each year. February to April is the least rainy stretch and the trail is firmest; September to November brings the most water but also the most mud.
